El Nido, the last-frontier of the Philippines, tucked away in the northern tip of Palawan. A real treasure known for its jaw-dropping scenery and protected marine life. But there’s more to it than just lush jungles, white-sand beaches, limestone cliffs, and clear-as-glass waters—it’s also becoming a hot spot for SURFING!
Surfing in El Nido Palawan: My Experience and Honest Review
I first visited El Nido in 2010, but even since moving here in 2013, I have primarily enjoyed the Island tours, unaware that there are other beaches with excellent waves.
Back in those days, inland tours weren’t particularly popular either, and it wasn’t until I met a local friend named Dexter—now one of El Nido’s licensed surf instructors—that I heard about a couple of surf spots.
However, as a solo female traveler who didn’t know how to ride a scooter or motorbike, I hesitated to explore that far and other aspects of my life happened. Looking back, I have come to realize how long I’ve been missing out on the islands’ surfing adventures.
So let me help you out by not repeating the same mistake I made and let me introduce you to a couple of spots!
El Nido Surfing Spot 1: Duli Beach
Duli Beach offers an opportunity to unwind and connect with nature. Compared to other popular beaches like Nacpan, Vanilla Beach, and LIO Beach, Duli is still a bit more secluded and raw, offering a serene escape from the bustling tourist areas.
It is a 40-minute motorbike ride from the town of El Nido, just a little further north from Nacpan Beach.
It is the most famous surf destination in El Nido, because the waves here are known for their consistency, making it a more reliable destination for those who are eager to catch some waves.

Our next surf spot, Lio Beach! The charm of Lio Beach lies not only in its natural beauty and well-kept garden and landscapes, but also in its accessibility. This breathtaking location features a range of hotels, restaurants, and amenities. Providing both convenience and escape.
I must admit, this spot has been just as busy as it is just a quick 15-minute motorbike ride from El Nido town. So, do expect a little more traffic on the line-up during your surf lessons.

El Nido Surfing Lessons: What to Prepare
To begin, what preparations should be made? My foremost essential is a rash guard. This garment safeguards your skin from sunburn, abrasions, and irritation during water sports, while also offering a layer of insulation in breezy conditions.
Once this is addressed, the remaining items will consist of the typical beach essentials, such as beach towel for changing, sunscreen, and a bottle of water for hydration.
Duli Beach Surf Lesson
Upon entering Duli Beach, there will already be plenty of surf lessons promoted, but I highly recommend licensed surf instructors such as @surfelnido and @elnidosurfexperience. They are located at the far-left-end of the beach by Duli Beach Resort.
Lio Beach Surf Lesson
While in Lio, you will spot them easily by the Surf Kiosk on the beach where they rent out frisbees, volleyball, surfboards and bodyboards.
Both surf locations, Lio and Duli, are beginner friendly spots and both provide lessons with enthusiastic instructors eager to share their passion for the sport, catering to all skill levels, but personally, I prefer surfing in Lio Beach as it is closer and more convenient for me – plus the food options are insanely good!
But when it comes to sure and more consistent waves, Duli Beach will not fail you. If you don’t own a surfboard there are plenty of rental options available for both locations.

El Nido Surfing Lessons : Rental and Prices
For both locations, they rent Surfboards (soft top boards are best for students & beginners and longboards) for only P500.- per hour.
And if you’d like to have a lesson and hire a surf instructor, that’s an additional P500.- per hour.

What month is best for surfing in El Nido?
And as for the most ideal time to surf, its prime surfing season is from November to March (if you’re lucky till April).
During these months, the waves are at their most consistent, offering both exciting experiences for seasoned surfers, and yet manageable conditions for beginners.
The monsoon winds from the northeast bring in swells (Amihan Season) that make the beaches come alive with waves and cool breeze.
Regardless of when you visit, the welcoming surf community and the stunning natural backdrop ensures a memorable time.

However, I must remind you that safety should always be your top priority.
Be sure to adhere to local guidelines, respect surf etiquette, and check the weather and ocean conditions before you head out. The best course of action is to consult your surf instructor for guidance.
My top advice before hitting the waves is to approach it with an open mind and a sense of adventure, embrace the learning process and don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself—falling off the board is part of the experience!
Remember to listen carefully to your instructor, as their local knowledge and expertise can make all the difference in your learning journey.
